product previously developed at Media Lab?

Hello, I'm about to graduate from the MIT Media Lab and move back to NYC. My product, a brain-reading bike helmet, originated at the Media Lab, but it will be transferred to my NYC company (which has existed since 2009) if it is to be developed further. I have already started to make arrangements for this through MIT, which is well experienced in technology transfer to startups.

Is this an acceptable submission? If so, can my submitted video have Media Lab's name on it?

    Hi Arlene,

Thanks for writing and for your interest in New York's Next Top Makers. MIT Media Lab is not eligible to enter the competition because they are outside NYC and have more than 10 employees. I'm afraid you as an individual are not eligible to enter the competition if you are not an NYC resident. In addition, you can't enter via your NYC-based company unless the IP has already been transferred to that company (it sounds like that is not the case).

    Per the Official Rules:
"(ix) Submissions must: (a) be the original work product of the Contestant; (b) be solely owned by Contestant and with no other person or entity having any right or interest in it; and (c) not violate the Intellectual Property rights or other rights including but not limited to copyright, trademark, patent, contract, and/or privacy rights, of any other person or entity. A Contestant may contract with a third party for technical assistance to create the Submission provided the Submission components, including the design and prototype, if applicable, are solely the Contestant’s work product and the result of the Contestant’s ideas and creativity, and the Contestant owns all rights to them."

Please let me know if you have further questions and I will be happy to assist you. You can email me directly at support@challengepost.com. Thank you again for your question.
